Galleries and museums around the world are developing major online resources that are usually available free of charge. These resources extend from images of their collections to downloads of publications and other resources.

The Getty Research Institute - The Getty Research Institute is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing understanding of the visual arts and their various histories through its expertise, active collecting program, public programs, institutional collaborations, exhibitions, publications, digital services, and residential scholars programs.

The Getty Search Gateway - provides access to its Open Content Program (more than 87,000 images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute),

The Getty Research Portal - online search platform providing global access to digitized art history texts. Through this multilingual, multicultural union catalog, scholars can search and download complete digital copies of publications for the study of art, architecture, material culture, and related fields. The Portal is free to all users.

The Getty Vocabularies - structured terminology for art, architecture, decorative arts and other material culture, archival materials, visual surrogates, and bibliographic materials.

Architects of South Australia - a database of material about the professional lives and contributions of a selection of the state's architects from 1836 to the present day. In addition to providing scholarly biographical information, the database also identifies the architects' principal South Australian built works. Note, however, that the listings are not comprehensive.

Art-Search Australia - The Australian Art Directory - a listing website of galleries, artists, art suppliers, etc.

Office of the Arts - the Australian Government's website for the arts and culture portfolio.

Australian Women's Art Register - an archive and repository of slides, published material and other written sources, both old and new, documenting Australian women artists, their images and their writings.

Design & Art Australia Online - an open access and dynamic scholarly reference work on Australian artists.

In the Artist's Footsteps - a website being developed as a site for art lovers and students to gain an appreciation of the lives and works of Australian artists and the social environments in which they lived.

Artdaily - the first art newspaper on the net.

Art - Americas


The Met Publications Online - The Metropolitan Museum of Art has digitised 5 decades of its publications and put them online - many of them available to download for free.

Art21 - documentary series from PBS on 21st century contemporary art. Due to rights restrictions, the videos on their website can't be viewed but they have a Youtube channel which shows segments, teasers and exclusives and these can be viewed in Australia.

post - post is MoMA’s online resource devoted to art and the history of modernism in a global context. In particular, post considers how transnational networks have influenced artistic production and presents and contextualizes specific practices that remain little known outside their countries of origin.

Art - Europe


Agence photographique de la Reunion des Musees Nationaux - a searchable series of links to works of art held in national and regional French museums. Created by the Photo agency of the Reunion des Musees Nationaux to open up access to a fabulous catalogue of online photographs of artistic works. Over 200 000 photographs of works of art collected in the national and regional museums of France, museums such as the Louvre, Orsay, the Centre Georges Pompidou or the Picasso Museum are now directly accessible on the Internet.

British Library Images Online - Images Online gives you instant access to thousands of the greatest images from the British Library's collections which include manuscripts, rare books, musical texts and maps spanning almost 3000 years. The range of images available include illustrations, drawings, paintings and photographs.

COLLAGE - The City of London Libraries, Archives and Guildhall Art Gallery is host to COLLAGE, an image database containing over 20,000 works of art from its collections.

Europeana - paintings, music, films and books from Europe's galleries, libraries, archives and museums.

TRACEY contemporary drawing research and practice electronic open access journal

Web Gallery of Art - a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism periods (1000-1850), currently containing over 26.000 reproductions. Picture commentaries, artist biographies are available.

Art history


ART-Guide - Collection of Art History Resources - provides access to art history websites, such as subject gateways, image databases, search engines, or mailing lists. The collection covers the full range of European medieval, modern, and contemporary art history, and Aesthetics. The site is maintained by the University of Heidelberg Library.
